LIBRARY EDUCATION
The overall objective of the library curriculum is to teach essential library skills to all students, but more importantly, to help each child develop an appreciation for books and the joy of reading them.

KINDERGARTEN :

Main Objectives-To:

  • create an atmosphere where the students will find the library to be a friendly and interesting place.
  • teach correct library behavior.
  • help students develop listening and discussion skills.
  • teach students the proper care of books.
  • introduce, review, and reinforce library terms and concepts.
  • introduce, review and reinforce library terms and concepts.
  • motivate students to want to learn to read through the fun of hearing stories and enjoying picture books.

FIRST GRADE:

Main Objectives-To:

  • review proper care of books and proper library behavior.
  • begin the process that will lead to independent use of the library.
  • assist the students in checking books out on their own and returning them on time.
  • help the students understand the arrangement of books in the library. -
  • build the student’s knowledge and understanding of library and book terms and concepts.
  • teach that an illustrator draws the pictures in a book and to introduce Caldecott Award winning books.

SECOND GRADE:

Main Objectives-To:

  • review proper care of books, library behavior and independent checkout process.
  • review parts of a book as well as learn about the title page, index and table of contents.
  • introduce the concepts of “fiction” and “non-fiction.”
  • introduce the card catalog and the Dewey Decimal System.
  • introduce special areas of literature (i.e.-Biography, folk tales, mystery, Caldecott, etc.)

THIRD GRADE:

Main Objectives-To:

  • review proper care of books, library behavior and checkout process.
  • review parts of a book as well as learn and elaborate on information found on the title page.
  • introduce and teach card catalog skills.
  • introduce and teach index skills.
  • introduce the atlas.
  • encourage the transition from easy readers to juvenile fiction.
  • introduce the use of the library computer catalog.

FOURTH GRADE:

Main Objectives-To:

  • review the basic skills in library science.
  • introduce the vertical file as well as the location of reference materials.
  • prepare students to be fully independent in the library.
  • develop proficiency in the use of the card catalog.
  • teach the ten major classes of the Dewey Decimal System.
  • introduce Newbery Award books.
  • encourage independent reading.
  • introduce the use of the library computer catalog.
  • practice use of the index.

FIFTH GRADE:

Main Objectives-To:

  • continue developing indexing skills through use of World Almanac.
  • review and reinforce parts of a book and its story.
  • reinforce knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System.
  • develop recognition of the three ways of cataloging books on the computer.
  • continue use of the library computer catalog.
  • develop note taking skills, outlining and making a bibliography.
  • encourage the reading of Newbery Award books as well as other children’s classic literature.
  • introduce use of the library computer catalog.
  • Continue use of the index through use of the World Almanac.

After completing this library curriculum, all students should be prepared to use all types of libraries with skill and knowledge.

The library is the hub of learning at Eames Way School. My goal is to have the library as open and accessible as is possible to teachers, students and parents.
