REMINDER TO PARENTS

Town- wide Volleyball Tournament: Thursday March 18 at 6:00 PM at Marshfield High School.  Mrs. Sombronsky's 5th grade class and Mrs. Jackson's 4th grade class won the GWS volleyball tournament in December. These classes will be representing GWS at the town-wide volleyball tournament.  Please join us to cheer on your classmates.

Jump Rope For Heart: Throughout February all of the students have been practicing their jump roping skills in Mr. Jackson's PE class. Each student did an amazing job learning new skills and exercising their hearts. The Jump Rope For Heart fundraiser was a huge success and thank you to everyone who contributed.

March School Lunch Menu is available online.  Click the “Lunch Menu” button at the top of the GWS home page or click on the “Food Services” button on the left-hand toolbar for point of sales forms and school menus.

Hats On For A Cure: Friday March 12.  A donation of $1.00 or more to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) will give you “special permission” to wear a favorite hat IN SCHOOL ALL DAY on Friday March 12.  Donations will be collected during lunches Wednesday and Thursday, March 10 & 11.

Cystic Fibrosis is a disease that affects the lungs of many young children. Ninety cents of every dollar goes to research & patient care. Thank you for helping one of your classmates, adding more tomorrows to all children with CF and for helping CF stand for “Cure Found”.  For more information on CF visit www.cff.org

FROM THE NURSE

Should I keep my child home or send him or her to school:  Consider keeping your child home if he or she has a fever of 100.4 degrees or higher; has been vomiting; has symptoms that prevent him/her from participating in school, such as: excessive tiredness or lack of appetite; productive coughing, sneezing, headache, body aches, earache or sore throat.  Keep your child home until his/her fever has been gone for 24 hours without medication.  Colds can be contagious for at least 48 hours.  Returning to school too soon may slow the recovery process and expose others unnecessarily to illness.

If you decide to keep your child home from school, please be sure to notify the front office before 9:00 AM. If we do not receive a call, we will try to reach the parent or guardian with the Connect Ed System to account for the child.   A note explaining the absence should be brought to the classroom teacher by the student upon return to school. A doctor’s note is required if a child is out five or more consecutive days. A telephone call does not eliminate the requirement for a written absence note when your child returns to school.

FROM THE PTO

Read Across America was a HUGE success! Thank you to Mrs. Lauzier, Mrs. Festa and Mrs. Duffy for all of their hard work to make the school look wonderful for the children. We could not have done it without the parent volunteers who helped transform the school into a world of Dr. Seuss!! Our guest readers were a hit – thank you to everyone who read to the children on Thursday! Thank you as well to the Cat in the Hat for making a special appearance!

Trivia Night was a huge success! Thank you to everyone who came out to support the PTO! We heard such great feedback that we just might plan another night in the spring! Keep your eye out for more information!

Pizza Bingo Night is approaching. We are looking for volunteers for the prep work as well as the night of. If you are interested in helping out for this event, please contact Yvonne Bridges at ybridges1@marykay.com or Diane Kennedy at dianekennedy4@verizon.net.  We will be having a meeting on Monday, March 8th at 9:30 in the cafeteria at school if anyone would like to join.

The PTO is accepting empty ink cartridges for recycling. You may send them into school, Attn PTO and we will recycle them to earn money for GWS.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Internet Safety Presentation Friday, March 12, at 8:15 AM and 9:45 AM in the Furnace Brook Middle School auditorium.  Plymouth County Assistant District Attorney Kristen Stone will present important information on internet safety, including the legal difficulties that students can encounter when using the internet inappropriately. A member of the Massachusetts State Police will also provide information on internet crime, as well as search and seizure.  The message will be clear -- You are not as safe as you think when you are using the internet; and, anyone can be held accountable for participating in illegal activities when using the internet. It is essential for parents to be aware of what many students are doing on computers and telephones, including the potential consequences for their actions.  As we strive to teach all students to be more socially responsible, educating the community is an important part of the process.

We encourage parents to attend the first presentation which will begin at 8:15 A.M. Parents are asked to arrive early and sit in the front of the auditorium. When students return to their classes parents will be able to remain and ask questions.  The second presentation will begin at 9:45 AM, but will have very limited extra seating.

On Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at 7:30 P.M., Attorney Stone will present further information on the topic of internet safety for parents and members of the Marshfield community in the Furnace Brook Middle School auditorium.

Marshfield Education Foundation (MEF) will meet Wednesday, March 11 at 7:00 PM at the Governor Winslow School.  This community effort will be comprised of 9 voting members as well as the current Superintendent or designee and a member of the School Committee. These two members shall hold permanent official seats with no voting rights. If possible, the board should represent a complete cross section of the Marshfield community. The second goal is the election of the executive team and Grant Team Chairperson. Many of these positions will carry up to a three year commitment. If you are interested in holding a position, please attend the meeting.

Title 1 Program: Marshfield’s annual Title 1 evening program will be held this year on Thursday, March 18 from 7:00-8:00 PM at the Furnace Brook Middle School Library.  Parents are invited to join the Title 1 directors and tutors for a fun night of exploring children’s storybooks that present interesting math ideas.

Parent Presentation on MCAS: The Marshfield Public Schools Special Education Department and Parent Advisory Council invites all parents to attend a presentation on The MCAS & Students with Disabilities. The workshop will be presented by Johanne Pino of the Massachusetts Advocates for Children and is scheduled for Thursday March 18, 2010 from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at the Marshfield Ventress Memorial Library. This workshop is funded by the Massachusetts Advocates for Children, is open to the public, and is free to all participants; however, we kindly ask that you register in advance by contacting Susan Moyse @ 781-837-7689 or susan.moyse@verizon.net.
