Do You Know the Answers?
(Remember…even Albert Einstein asked questions!)
1. When does school begin?
Children may arrive at the playground from 8:10 - 8:20. You may come into the building at 8:20 when dismissed by the teacher on duty on the playground.
2. When I am tardy?
After 8:25 AM you are late. If you know that you are going to be late, you must bring a note from home stating why you are late. CHILDREN WHO ARE LATE MUST REPORT TO THE OFFICE BEFORE GOING TO THEIR CLASSROOM. PARENTS ARE REQUESTED NOT TO BRING THEIR CHILD DIRECTLY TO THE CLASSROOM.
3. What must I do if I am absent from school?
We use the Safe to School program. If you are going to be absent, we ask that your parents call the school before 9:00 AM. If the office has not receives a call by that time, they will call your home to check on your absence. When your parents feel that you are well enough to return to school, you just bring a note on the day that you return stating the day(s) you were absent.
4. How do I get dismissed from school?
Your parents should write a note or call the office to let us know the time you are to be dismissed. If you become ill while at school, the school nurse, Mrs. Reape, will call your parent/guardian to pick you up. At no time may you leave the school without permission.
5. When does the school day end?
Everyone is dismissed at 3:00 PM daily except on Thursday when dismissal is at 12:45PM.
6. When does my bus come?
Bus schedules are hard to be exact with due to traffic and weather conditions or other unexpected occurrences. In most instances your bus will pick you up about 20 minutes before school starts. Allow yourself extra time on stormy days. You will arrive home after school about 20 minutes after the bus leaves the school.
7. Are there any special rules that I must follow on the bus?
The best rule to follow at all times is to observe good manners. Extra rules apply while on the bus for safety reasons. Some of these rules are:
8. Is there a law about buses that I should know?
YES! It is important that all bus riders know and follow this law when getting off the bus if you must cross the street to get to your home:
9. What do I do during a fire drill?
Follow the fire drill procedure posted near the door of any room you find yourself in. There is NO TALKING during a fire drill so you can hear your teacher's directions. Line up with your class and wait for the signal to re-enter the building.
10. When may I use the phone?
Only if an emergency or something very urgent comes up. The phone in the office is for the office staff and teachers to use. Calling home because you forgot your lunch, sneakers, or homework is important, but is not an emergency. Cell phones are not allowed.
11. What may I wear to school?
School should be considered a special place and the way you dress should show this. We would expect that you come to school neat and clean. Please remember to dress for the weather and remember your sneakers for the days you have gym. The students clothing should be appropriate for elementary school children. (No bare midriffs, see through garments, halter tops, tube tops, spaghetti strap tops, short pants, and clothing referencing violence or profanity.) Hats, sweatshirt hoods, and bandannas may not be worn in the school building. Footwear that marks or damages the floors (ex.heelies and taps ) are also not allowed. We also discourage children from wearing clothing with drawstrings for safety reasons and encourage parents to remove them.

14. May I sit with my friends during lunch?
Your teacher will decide where your class will sit in the cafetorium. You will most likely be allowed to sit with your friends that are in your class.
15. What are the lunchroom rules?
Good manners are expected at all times. Running, yelling, throwing food or any other objects are not allowed. Only the table captains are allowed to be out of their seats after lunch is served. When the lights are turned out, you are not allowed to talk. Lunch should be an enjoyable time for all children. Poor behavior will cause you to lose the privilege of eating in the cafetorium.
16. What about recess? Do I have to go out?
You will probably have two recesses a day or one longer one. If your class goes out, you should expect to go with them. No one goes out on stormy or very cold days. You cannot stay inside without permission from your teacher. No one may leave the playground at any time. If you are ill or injured, let the teacher on duty know and you will be escorted to the clinic. Please use good manners at recess so all may have an enjoyable break.

Yes, if you are in grade 3, 4, or 5 and have a signed bike permit which are available at the office. Bike permits can only be used during daylight savings time. All bike riders MUST and WEAR a bike helmet and have a lock to lock their bike to the bike rack while it is at school. All bike riders must walk their bikes on the sidewalk and playground to keep the other children safe. If you ride to school along Ocean Street, please ride on the sidewalk, but be careful as there are also children walking on the same sidewalk.
18. When may my parents visit school?
Your parents may visit just about any time at all. We have special conference times right after progress reports are given out when your parents may schedule an appointment to see your teachers. Parents may also visit during the school day by calling the office at least a day ahead to let us know when they will be coming and whom they would like to visit.
19. What about taking family trips?
We encourage families to work, play, and travel together. However, we truly hope that such trips can occur during school vacations and not when school is in session. If such a trip must be scheduled during school time, no school work will be provided prior to the trip as much of the work the children do requires prior instruction. All work missed must be made up within a reasonable amount of time after returning to school. As with all other absences, a written note explaining the absence must be brought to school when you return.
We tried to answer a few of the most important questions you might have. Any others questions that you might have can be answered by either your teacher or the office staff.
We hope that each of you will come to school and enjoy the rights and privileges that are yours at Daniel Webster School. We also hope that you will respect and be sensitive to the rights and privileges of others. Each of you has a big responsibility to take advantage of the opportunities that are offered to you.
Remember to try to do your best at all times.
You will be happy and succeed if you do!
