As the first quarter comes to an end and we head for the holiday season, I would like to congratulate DWS students,

parents, and staff for an excellent start to the 2009-10 school year. Several classroom changes have taken place since last

June, due primarily to system-wide budget cuts.  Both a first and second grade classroom were eliminated resulting in

larger class sizes and teacher reassignments.  On the positive side two fulltime resource teachers were added to our staff.

During the month of October MCAS results were mailed to grade four and five parents. Once again our students did a

great job; Cycle VI composite aggregate scores were 91.0 (Very High) in English-Language Arts, and 88.1 (High) in

Mathematics. Congratulations to everyone on once again achieving AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) on the most difficult

state testing program in the country. Over seventy per cent of the children scored in the advanced/proficient range.

Our Title 1 tutors continue to supplement the regular school academics in both reading and mathematics.  Four SPED

Resource teachers add their expertise in helping our children achieve to the best of their abilities.

Once again our PTO is providing interesting and meaningful programs.  Last summer’s Reading and Math Camps were

well attended and successful. The highly regarded Ball in the House vocal group performed to a very receptive audience in

late October. In January (Reading Week) we are looking forward to performances by Jay O’Callahan and Laura Ingalls

Wilder.

The DWS Volunteer Program is providing the school with a pool of interested and helpful parents. An organizational

meeting was held in October.  The DWS Council met in October and November and is currently supporting the publishing

of the DWS Times and the collecting of school items for the annual backpack drive for Carolina Hill.

The DWS Compact was recently sent home with students; please sign this important document and return it to school

if you have not already done so. Student participation in the Magical Mailbox continues to be strong; students will be

recognized at a special assembly. It continues to be important to work as a team in order to provide the best education

possible for our students.

As our school year progresses, it is again reassuring to have the support of a capable and dedicated staff, interested and

involved parents, and a progressive school council.
